General MacArthur, Second World War veteran, and at the time of the Korean War was commander of US military forces in the Pacific. Now when the North Koreans attacked the South Koreans an emergency meeting was held between UN countries and it decided that this conflict in Korea filled in the requirements for the UN to defend South Korea. However before this decision was made General MacArthur had already deployed US troops from Japan to South Korea. Although the US troops were being pushed back to Pusan MacArthur was put in as commander of UN forces in Korea. Once MacAthur had reinforcements he decided to use a pincer movement against the North Korean forces this operation was known as the Inchon landings. In conclusion MacArthur was significant in the Korean War because he was able to make military operations successful even if it was very risky, which in this case was bad weather conditions and the distance from the rest of the UN forces was very large, he was not afraid to speak against his superiors if he believed they were making ineffective choices and if he didn’t make the Inchon landings a success then there is a big possibility that the war would’ve ended sooner only with a total victory to the North Koreans. The Chinese intervention in Korea was significant as it was one of the main pivotal points during the Korean War. It started when the North Korean forces were being pushed back right up to the mountains which had the most horrible winters. Now the reason China didn't intervene as soon as UN forces crossed the 38th parallel was mainly because China didn't think that they could defeat the more modernised army. However when the UN forces reached Chosin the Chinese launched a fierce ambush that sent the UN forces right back across the 38th Parallel. In conclusion the Chinese intervention in Korea was significant because it made the Korean War last longer because now the UN forces have another enemy to fight and if the Chinese hadn’t intervened then chances are the war would’ve ended sooner and with a victory to the UN.
